Best Value

The law requires The Police Authority make sure that the West Midlands has an effective and efficient police service. The Government requires us - rather than the Chief Constable - to review all aspects of the police service in our area.
The aim of this is to:
- improve the quality of service,
- make sure that the service is cost effective, and:
- that it is provided efficiently.
Over a five-year period we, with the Chief Constable, will be conducting an in-depth review of all parts of the police service in the West Midlands. We will also be reviewing in a similar way the manner in which we undertake our own work.
Best value across the country is being led by the DETR (Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions) but it mainly aims its work at the application of best value to local authorities. The Home Office is taking the lead on giving guidance on its application to police authorities and the police service. Both have their own web sites with much more detailed information on best value.
Our current Best Value Performance Plan gives more information about the process, what we have achieved so far and our plans for future work.
