Unity Cup Project

Coventry

The Authority gave a £2000 grant providing 25 outreach sessions across Coventry over an eight week period from 1st April 2008. The sessions were created to give young people the chance to get involved in positive activities.

The outreach sessions were followed by a football knock out tournament held 17/18 May. Two hundred and forty young people aged between 11 and 18 years took part and they all received a football strip and a medal for participating in the event.

The final was held at the Ricoh Arena, Coventry with local cheer leading dance team "Heels and Toes" to entertain the audience during the interval. The winning team received trophies presented by Chief Supt Glover, Commander of Little Park Street police station. 

BSS Behavioural Support Service Community Sports Club

Birmingham

A grant of £1852 was awarded by the Authority for a non-contact boxing programme. The scheme was aimed at pupils aged 11-15 that had been permanently excluded from mainstream schools in central Birmingham due to their behaviour.

The programme supported those involved in achieving the preliminary standard and bronze levels with the Amateur Boxing Association of England (ABAE).  It set out to enable pupils to develop enthusiasm, motivation, determination to succeed and improve their communication and understanding of others.

Elim Church Kingstanding

Birmingham

The sum of £1793.43 was given in support of a holiday adventure club and football pursuits, for 8 to 16 year old boys and girls. A variety of football equipment was purchased and a coaching week was held 26-30 May 2008 for young people from Sutton Coldfield and Erdington.

The youngsters were met and trained by premiership and championship footballers and enjoyed an opportunity to chat with the professionals during the interval. The winning football team were given a Darren Moore and Mike Tindall cup and 10 tickets to Aston Villa. In addition, an adventure club was held at the end of the summer with various craft activities for 5 to 11year olds, including conjurers and puppets as well as games, craft making and prizes.

Pelsall Elderley community

Bloxwich

The Authority granted £2000 towards a drop-in centre for the elderly to provide a comfortable and safe environment for people to visit, play games and socialise. A bingo machine and refreshments were purchased. The residents were also been given personal security alarms and opportunities to meet regularly with their neighbourhood policing team for crime prevention advice and local support.

Pink Shield

West Midlands

A grant of £2000 was made by the Authority towards a poster campaign about hate related crime incidents and same sex domestic violence. The aim was to increase awareness across the whole of the West Midlands area and encourage people to seek help and not suffer in silence.
