Stop and Search

Vehicle stops

A police officer can legally stop any vehicle at any time and ask to see the driver's licence. They can ask questions such as where are you going and why? This would be considered a 'Vehicle Stop'.

If the officer however asks you to leave your vehicle and it is then searched, this is a 'Vehicle Stop and Search'. The officer will be looking for the same items as during a pedestrian stop and search:

  • Stolen goods
  • Drugs
  • Weapons
  • Explosives or other terrorist material

Your vehicle can be searched if unattended

If a stop and search concerning serious violence or terrorism is underway and you've left your parked car in the area, it can be searched in your absence. Police do not need your permission.

Officers must leave you a form explaining what they have done and why it was searched, providing you with contact details in case you have any questions.

If your vehicle is damaged in the process, you have the right to ask for compensation, but only if the police didn't find anything in their search that connects you to crime or terrorism.
