Opportunism, greed and criminality were all explanations offered for the August 2011 disturbances, by young people who are involved in projects that aim to make people feel safer, when they gathered at the 2011 youth event held by West Midlands Police Authority.
The event was a celebration of work carried out by young people, who came to showcase projects they had been developing throughout the summer.
Presentations included (PowerPoint files)
- Dudley young advisers consultation tool WhatYauThink
- Dudley Youth Council also talked about the work they are doing to make a difference in their area
- Sandwell Shadow Youth Cabinet described the work they are doing to prioritise the issues that local young people have voted their top concerns about their own safety
- A project group from Walsall talked about their participation in an international project aimed at promoting good practice in relationships
The event also included entertainment from Birmingham Youth Theatre, Freeman Dance Academy, Coventry and musical duo Alesha and Flossie from Birmingham
